Allergies What Are They?

You probably know people; perhaps yourself, who are unable to enjoy certain foods, participate in activities, or simply enjoy theallergies-01A.jpg great outdoors due to problems with allergies.

In fact, did you know that the sixth leading cause of chronic disease in America is allergies, with an annual cost exceeding 18 billion dollars! Nearly 50 million children and adults are believed to suffer from [tag-tec]allergy[/tag-tec] related symptoms. This means that a great many people live with certain lifestyle limitations by what we've come to know as an allergy, which is what an adverse reaction by the immune system to any foreign substance is called.

So what exactly are Allergies anyway? Well [tag-cat family health ]allergies[/tag-cat] can be an overreaction of the immune system to substances that often times cause no reaction in other individuals. These substances can trigger such reactions as wheezing, sneezing, itching and coughing. Many allergies also have been linked to a range of serious and common chronic respiratory illnesses such as asthma and sinusitis. Additionally, in rare cases allergic reactions can even be fatal. However, with patient education and proper management, allergic diseases can be controlled, and people can lead productive and normal lives.

There is no clear apparent medical reason why people contract allergies, but one thing remains clear: the condition is indiscriminate in its coverage and may affect us regardless of race, age or gender. Often times the allergy manifests in our infancy or childhood, although some symptoms may appear at any age or can even reappear after a period of apparent dormancy.

Most allergies are largely insignificant and may be dealt with by simple lifestyle choices; however, there is a possibility of them either adversely affecting our daily life, or in extremely rare circumstances create a life-threatening condition.

This is the reason why we must first understand how an allergic reaction happens, and more importantly, what we can do on our own or with the help of a doctor to detect the problem early.

Some Reasons for Allergic Sensitivity Development Are:

1) Repeated exposure to allergens to which one has a programmed response genetically.

2) The specific genes from the parents to their offspring.

3) The length of time and degree of exposure.

When allergies come to the fore front, we generally say that it has been 'triggered', implying that the body has been exposed to a 'trigger' that activated the allergy from within. These 'triggers' can be a whole host of things such as animal fur and dander, feathers, mites, house dust, pollen, cockroach droppings, insect stings or even everyday chemicals like perfumes, cosmetics, shampoos and soaps not to mention dyes, medication, synthetic fiber, and a huge variety of foods and drinks.

In the event of an allergic reaction our immune systems, which normally wards off unwanted foreign substances in our bodies like parasites, bacteria, and dirt, mistakenly identifies some common and normally harmless objects as something it must destroy. It then releases antibodies that cause bodily manifestations or 'symptoms'.

Take note that if you suffer from seasonal allergies it may help you learn more about what particular allergens are being triggered. An allergic reaction that you may experience only upon the arrival of spring may imply that you are allergic to grass, pollen, or a variety of other natural substances you may encounter when you are enjoying some outdoor activities that you only engage in during the spring.

If you're an allergy sufferer it's best to speak to your doctor and if they feel it necessary they may prescribe [tag-tec]allergy_medicine[/tag-tec] which could be an over the counter recommendation. If severe enough they may even prescribe a prescription to ease your symptoms.
